The Mountain Democrat is California's oldest newspaper. It began publishing in Coloma in June 1851 as the El Dorado News. The publisher, Thomas Springer, moved the paper to Placerville at the end of that year and renamed it the El Dorado Republican. Then in 1854 Dan Gelwicks and William A. January bought the newspaper, the press and subscription list and renamed it the Mountain Democrat.
In 1964 it was bought by the McNaughton family led by F.F. McNaughton, who was in the first graduating class of New York's Columbia University School of Journalism in 1915. McNaughton bought the newspaper from the Barker family, which had owned it since 1922. Since 1987 the publisher has been James. C. Webb and since 1986 the editor has been Michael Raffety. The Mountain Democrat now publishes four times a week with an average circulation of more than 13,000. It is the leading source of news for western El Dorado County, printing full process color and using all digital photography. |

Ann Totherow and Barry Dye opened Annieberries on Historic Main Street in November of 2005. They are new to retail as Ann was in banking for 35 years while Barry worked as an Air Traffic Controller. Although Barry has an Aeronautical Engineering degree it didn't help that much when he assembled the store's pedal airplane! Their goal is to provide a variety of unusual gift ideas for children ages birth to 10 and some products for Moms as well. Moms may use the nursing station or changing table while shopping downtown.
Annieberries won't carry any battery-operated toys. You will find plenty of tops, blocks, puzzles and other toys requiring motor skills and some thought. Each month the store will offer themed craft days and is offering an introduction to “Baby Signs” and “Kindermusik”. |

The El Dorado County Visitor's Authority is a council of the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce. The council develops marketing strategies and programs that promote tourism in El Dorado County. The Visitor's Authority participates in such publications and events as El Dorado County Farm Trails and Visitors Guide, Explore El Dorado and Whitewater Media Day. |
